Sauvignon Blanc
Valentine's Day Wine Gifts

Sauvignon Blanc is a high quality wine grape which is used for making crispy, dry and refreshing white wine. It grows well in both warm and cool climates. Its aroma may vary according to the climatical condition of the region. It is also used as an ingredient in Bordeaux wines. In this article we are going to discuss about the purpose of producing Sauvignon Blanc, the different kinds o flavours available in Sauvignon Blanc, the different methods to ferment Sauvignon Blanc and the climatic conditions required for its adequate growth.

The purpose of producing Sauvignon Blanc

Sauvignon Blanc is a variety of grape having green-skin which originates from the Bordeaux region of France. The name of the grape is obtained from the two French words “sauvage” and “blanc” because of its early origin as a home-grown grape in the western France. It is now planted in many wine producing countries in the world. These Sauvignon Blanc grapes are used to produce a dry and crispy refreshing white wine. Sauvignon Blanc is also an important ingredient of the famous dessert wines such as Sauternes and Barsac. The Sauvignon Blanc is widely planted and cultivated in France, California and New Zealand.

Sauvignon Blanc was the first fine quality wine which is to be bottled with a screwcap in commercial quantities, especially by New Zealand producers. The wine is usually consumed young because it does not particularly benefit from aging. Dry and sweet white Bordeaux, typically made with Sauvignon Blanc as a major ingredient, is one exception. Wine experts have described Sauvignon Blanc as "crisp, elegant, and fresh" which comes from the Loire Valley of France and New Zealand. The slightly chilled Sauvignon Blanc is an excellent combination with fish, cheese etc. It is also one of the few wines which can suit well with sushi.

How many kinds of flavours are available in Sauvignon Blanc?

The most salient characteristic of Sauvignon Blanc is its distinctiveness, penetrating aroma, which can induce the aroma of grapefruit, green melon, gooseberry, lemon, passion fruit, pepper and freshly mown grass. The grapes which are grown in cooler climates and fertile soils will have an excessive growth, herbaceous smells and flavors can dominate the character of the wine, while in the warmer regions the aromas and flavors of citrus, melons and passion fruit will emerge. The flavor of the Sauvignon Blanc can range from aggressively grassy to sweetly tropical depending on climate.

Different methods to ferment and age the Sauvignon Blanc

Most producers ferment and age their Sauvignon Blanc in stainless steel to emphasize the wine into crispy, zesty, invigorating qualities, while some ferment the wines in barrel. Malolactic fermentation is rare, and barrel aging is generally limited to a few months. Sauvignon Blanc wine is a versatile food wine which can be a good combination for everything from salad to fried chicken.

Climatic conditions suitable for the growth of Sauvignon Blanc

The Sauvignon Blanc grape produces different varieties of wines as it grown in different regions. It can tolerate more heat than any other grape variety. Sauvignon Blanc has higher acid content and often has the smell and taste of "melon". If it is grown in extreme cold climate, it can develop the characteristic of herbal aromas. Sauvignon Blanc produces large crops and it is comparatively lower in cost. Sauvignon Blanc originates in the Loire Valley of France. However, New Zealand has taken this grape to new heights in the cool Marlborough region, producing wines in gooseberry and racy tropical fruit flavors.

Quick Facts and Tips

Sauvignon Blanc is usually a dry white wine with distinctive qualities of herbs. This wine is widely available as a single varietal or blended with Semillon. Sauvignon Blanc also offers different varieties of flavors such as herbaceous smell, grass and hay and the blend flavors of citrus and tropical fruits, and often a gooseberry flavor to make wine tasting a very unique adventure.
